The Cuban Embassy delegation will lay a wreath at a location where the Cuban names are inscribed at Freedom Park’s Wall of Names. Freedom Park is a celebration of the achievement of democracy, founded on the values of human dignity, human rights and freedom. It serves as a symbol of the tortuous journey and the sacrifices made for freedom and a beacon of hope and inspiration for the future.
In September 2006, the then Cuban Ambassador, HE Ms Esther Armenteros, handed over the names of 2 107 Cuban freedom fighters who died in southern Africa fighting for humanity and and Freedom. Freedom Park inscribed all those names at The Wall of Names as it is its mandate to memorialize all the liberation heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of South Africa.
One of the crucial and innovative aspects of Freedom Park is its integration of history, culture and spirituality all foregrounded on indigenous knowledge systems. S`khumbutho is a memorial element that sits at the heart of Freedom Park, and amongst many history told is the 85 000 names of heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of this country in 8 different wars. Included in those names, are the names of the fallen Cuban heroes who perished in the battle of Cuito Cuanavale in Angola.
The Cubans inscribed on the Wall of Names have played a crucial part in the history of South Africa. It is therefore befitting that their legacy be remembered and commemorated.
