COMMEMORATING 30 YEARS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONSTITUTION
The South African Judicial Education Institute (SAJEI), in partnership with Freedom Park, will
host a national commemoration of 30 years of South Africa’s Constitution under the theme:
“From Struggle to Supremacy: 30 Years of the Constitution as a Living Memory.” The event
will be held at the Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum, Pretoria, on 26 June 2026.
The event will honour South Africa’s constitutional heroes through a ceremonial wreath-laying
at the Wall of Names, followed by a high-level seminar reflecting on the country’s journey from
apartheid to a constitutional democracy grounded in human dignity, equality, and the rule of
law. Speakers and participants include the honourable Deputy Chief Justice Dunstan
Mlambo, senior members of the Judiciary, distinguished scholars and constitutional experts,
as well as invited speakers on judicial development and constitutional education.
The programme will feature discussions on the role of the judiciary in advancing constitutional
democracy, the importance of constitutional education and active citizenship, and an
interactive audience engagement session. This commemoration reaffirms the Constitution as
a living instrument and calls for continued commitment to protecting rights, strengthening
democratic governance, and advancing social justice in South Africa.
