Freedom Park Commemorates International Museum Day with Free Entry for Learners
18 May 2026, marks International Museum Day, a global observance dedicated to recognising
museums as important spaces of education, cultural exchange, dialogue and heritage preservation.
As part of this international commemoration, Freedom Park Heritage Site is offering FREE entry for
learners from 18–25 May 2026, creating an opportunity for young people to engage with South
Africa’s rich history, heritage and stories of humanity.
International Museum Day, commemorated annually on 18 May, highlights the important role
museums play in shaping communities, preserving memory and promoting intercultural
understanding. Museums continue to serve as spaces where people can learn, reflect and connect
with the past while engaging with the present and future.
Freedom Park, through its memorial spaces, exhibitions and educational experiences, contributes
to this global mission by creating platforms for dialogue, nation building and social cohesion.
Learners visiting during this commemorative week will have the opportunity to explore the //hapo
museum, the Wall of Names, Isivivane and other memorial spaces that tell the story of South Africa’s
journey, resilience and collective memory
This initiative forms part of Freedom Park’s ongoing commitment to heritage education and
increasing access to cultural institutions for young people.
Visitors are welcome daily from 08:30 to 16:00.
Freedom Park encourages schools, educators, parents and communities to take part in this
important commemoration and inspire young people to connect with the heritage and stories that
shape our nation.
