Freedom Park and ZA Central Registry lead Africa-wide peace initiative on Africa Day.
Pretoria Thursday, 20 May 2025 – In an unprecedented celebration of unity, peace, and cultural solidarity,
Freedom Park, in collaboration with ZA Central Registry (ZACR) and Registry Africa, will host a powerful pan-African campaign titled “Silencing the Guns – Let the Drums Roll” on Africa Day, Sunday, 25 May 2025, at Freedom Park’s Isivivane.
Inspired by the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and its flagship aspiration to “Silence the Guns” across the
continent, the initiative invites all 55 African Union member states to participate in a symbolic, synchronised drumming performance—both physically and virtually—to declare Africa’s collective commitment to peace and unity.
The campaign is enhanced by a digital platform, www.silencingtheguns.africa, developed by ZACR. This
portal enables participants across Africa to upload their drumming performances, which will be curated into one powerful soundscape symbolising Pan-African harmony.
“This event is about more than drums — it’s a call for a united Africa, an end to conflict, and the celebration of our shared identity,” says Dr Jane Mufamadi, CEO of Freedom Park.
Mr Lucky Masilela, CEO of ZACR, adds: “Technology is the enabler that connects us. By bringing together
nations through drumming and digital innovation, we’re advancing peace and the African digital agenda.”
The event represents a moment of continental mobilisation for peace, grounded in heritage, digital innovation, and African identity. It calls upon governments, civil society, creatives, faith communities, and individuals to join the beat for peace.
Programme Highlights (08h00 – 10h00):
- Interfaith prayers and communal drumming to set a spiritual tone
- A cultural performance by Abafazi Bengoma
- A high-level panel discussion on the role of society and regional bodies in peacekeeping
- A mass drumming session led by renowned percussionist Dr Galane
- Live messages of peace and a unified call to action from key dignitaries
