Radio Freedom Archives Handover Marks Reconciliation Month
Freedom Park is proud to announce the receipt of invaluable archival materials from Radio Freedom, a collection that stands as a testament to the resilience, courage, and unity of South Africans during the liberation struggle. The handover of these archives is particularly significant as it coincides with the observance of Reconciliation Month, culminating in the commemoration of the Day of Reconciliation on 16 December.

This historic transfer highlights the shared responsibility of preserving and honouring the legacy of those who fought tirelessly for freedom and justice. Radio Freedom served as the voice of liberation, broadcasting daily in all major South African languages from exile. Its content—news, interviews, commentaries, speeches, and revolutionary music—galvanized a nation and inspired global solidarity against apartheid.

The collection includes the Radio Freedom Album, produced by Rounder Records, a United States-based recording company. The album captures critical moments of Radio Freedom’s broadcasts, such as signature tunes, youth programs addressing tricameral elections, women’s programs, revolutionary songs, and iconic addresses by O.R. Tambo, including his call to make South Africa ungovernable and his speech commemorating the ANC’s 73rd anniversary during the Year of the Women.

Additional materials, including a linen bag and a button featuring the Omroep Voor Radio Freedom logo, designed by Dutch cartoonist Opland, underscore the global solidarity that bolstered South Africa’s struggle for liberation. These items, part of a Dutch media campaign, symbolize the international support that amplified Radio Freedom’s voice.

Reflecting on the handover, Freedom Park CEO Dr. Jane Mufamadi said: “The archives of Radio Freedom are not only a window into our past but a bridge to reconciliation and unity in the present. As we celebrate Reconciliation Month, these materials remind us of the enduring spirit of solidarity and the sacrifices made for a free and just South Africa. They challenge us to continue fostering understanding and healing as we build a cohesive society.”

This month, Freedom Park invites all South Africans to engage with the narratives of the liberation struggle and reflect on the values of unity and reconciliation. The archival materials, including the contributions of Fulco van Aurich—a Dutch activist recognized with the Order of the Companions of

OR Tambo in Silver—and Azwitamisi Golden Neswiswi, a former Radio Freedom producer, will form a vital part of the Park’s efforts to educate and inspire future generations.
The Day of Reconciliation on 16 December serves as a powerful reminder of South Africa’s journey from division to unity. By preserving and sharing these stories, Freedom Park reinforces its commitment to honouring the past while fostering reconciliation and nation-building.
