Ungasali Storytelling Festival: Call for Entries
Storytelling has always been central to how we remember, learn and imagine the future. The
Ungasali Storytelling Festival continues this tradition by creating a space where stories are shared
through voice, movement, music and performance.
Taking place on 14 March 2026 at the South African State Theatre, the festival brings together
storytellers, poets, dancers and musicians in a celebration of both ancestral oral traditions and
contemporary expression. This year’s theme, “Echoes of Tomorrow: Stories Shaping the Future,”
centres youth voices while honouring the wisdom passed down through generations.
As a Freedom Park Heritage Site production, Ungasali blends live performance with digital
storytelling to extend its reach and inspire learning, creativity and dialogue beyond the stage.
Creatives are invited to submit a 1–2 minute recorded self-tape video in any South African official
language to be considered for participation.
Entries close on 6 February and can be sent to kopano@freedompark.co.za or
thandi@freedompark.co.za.
Ungasali is a reminder that stories do not only come from the past, but they also shape what comes
next.
