Youth Day Open Day at Freedom Park: Free Entry for Youth Aged 18–35

As South Africa commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 16 June 1976 Youth Uprisings, Freedom

Park invites young people to visit the heritage site on Youth Day and engage with the stories, values

and legacy that continue to shape our democracy.

The year 2026 marks a significant milestone in the country’s history. The youth of 1976 demonstrated

extraordinary courage and resilience in confronting an unjust education system and demanding

dignity, equality and freedom. Their actions became a defining moment in South Africa’s liberation

struggle and continue to inspire generations of young people.

In recognition of this important anniversary, and in observance of Youth Day, Freedom Park will offer

free entry to youth aged 18 to 35 years on 16 June 2026. The initiative provides an opportunity for

young South Africans to explore the heritage site, reflect on the legacy of the 1976 generation and

deepen their understanding of South Africa’s journey to freedom.

This year’s commemoration takes place under the national theme: RESET@50: The Future Calls

– Freedom Lives in Every Generation. The theme encourages reflection on the enduring legacy

of the youth of 1976 while recognising the role of today’s youth in shaping the nation’s future.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience Freedom Park’s memorials, exhibitions, and places

of contemplation, each of which contributes to preserving and sharing the stories of those who

sacrificed for freedom, human dignity, and justice.

As a national heritage site, Freedom Park remains committed to fostering remembrance, reflection,

and dialogue. Youth Day offers an opportunity not only to honour the courage of the 1976 generation,

but also to encourage meaningful engagement with the values and principles that underpin South

Africa’s constitutional democracy.
